Apple Launches Thinner iPad Air and iPad Mini

Apple has unveiled a top-of-the-range tablet called the iPad Air that is 20% thinner than the previous version.

The 9.7in (24.6cm) computer is 7.5mm (0.3in) thick and weighs 1lb (469g), which the firm claims is the lightest full-sized tablet on the market.

It is powered by the same A7 chip found in the company’s iPhone 5S.

The launch comes at a time when some analysts have suggested that Google’s Android is about to overtake Apple’s iOS as the bestselling tablet platform.

Apple also announced a new version of its iPad Mini.

Its 7.9in (20cm) screen has been upgraded to feature 2048 by 1536 pixels – the same as the larger model. It is being branded as “retina” to highlight the increased resolution.

Amazon and Google have already announced small tablets – the Kindle Fire HDX and Nexus 7 – with similar high definition displays.

“We’ve got the retina upgrade to the smaller iPad that many thought should have been there in the first place,” Tony Cripps, principal analyst at tech consultants Ovum, reflected after the announcement in San Francisco.

“Market share slip is inevitable because so many rival devices are coming out, which is not necessarily a bad thing as the overall sector is growing.

“Apple does now have a cheaper model thanks to it offering the original iPad Mini at a lower price – but the firm doesn’t really want to go to the low-end because that’s not where the greatest profit is extracted.”

Apple also announced that the latest version of its Mac operating system, Mavericks, would be offered at no cost to owners of computers already running any version of OS X released since 2009. It is the first time the company has not charged for a major Mac OS upgrade.

By contrast the full version of Windows 8.1 is sold for about £100, although it is free to existing Windows 8 users.

Linux-based Ubuntu has always been offered without charge. Chromebook computers also get free upgrades for Google’s PC operating system.

New laptops, productivity and leisure apps were also unveiled. However, Apple did not show off a new TV set-top box as some had speculated.

Google Ballon Internet

Google revealed top-secret plans Saturday to send balloons to the edge of space with the lofty aim of bringing Internet to the two-thirds of the global population currently without web access.

Scientists from the technology giant released up to 30 helium-filled test balloons flying 20 kilometres (12.4 miles) above Christchurch in New Zealand, carrying antennae linked to ground base stations.

While still in the early stages, “Project Loon” hopes eventually to launch thousands of balloons to provide Internet to remote parts of the world, allowing more than four billion people with no access to get online.

“Project Loon is an experimental technology for balloon-powered Internet access,” Google said in a statement.

“Balloons, carried by the wind at altitudes twice as high as commercial planes, can beam Internet access to the ground at speeds similar to today’s 3G networks or faster. Continue reading

Apple To Launch iPad Mini

Apple to launch smaller and cheaper machine that could be on shelves this autumn

  •     Smaller cheaper machine to launch ‘soon’ claim factory sources
  •     Screen between 7 and 8 inches
  •     Built to compete with cheap rivals such as Google’s £159 Nexus 7
  •     Sources in Apple’s supply chain claim tablet is already in production
  •     Earlier leaks hinted tablet would be on sale later this year
  •     Launch will go directly against Apple founder Steve Jobs wishes

Apple is notoriously secretive about its technical innovations and rumours of the smaller tablet are said to have originated from the Far East, where many of the company’s devices are manufactured.

They were reported by Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal, which quoted  several unnamed sources within Apple’s supply chain. A UK spokesman last night said: ‘Apple does not comment on rumour or speculation.’ Continue reading

Apple Announces New MacBook

Apple announces nextgeneration MacBook Pro Retina display, 071inches thin, shipping today for $2,199

Apple announced some new MacBook Airs and MacBook Pros early in its WWDC keynote today, but it had another surprise in store for its big hardware announcement: the next-generation MacBook Pro. It packs a Retina display with a 2880 x 1800 resolution (or 220ppi), and a casing that measures just 0.71-inch thin and weighs 4.46 pounds. In addition to that high resolution, Apple is also promising higher contrast ratios, better viewing angles and reduced glare compared to other laptop displays, and it’s updated all of its stock apps to take advantage of those extra pixels, not to mention Aperture and Final Cut Pro — “reading your mail is like reading fine print,” according to Apple’s Phil Schiller. As for the other specs, you’ll get up to 16GB of RAM, NVIDIA Kepler GT 650M graphics, up to a quad-core 2.7GHz Core i7 processor, a maximum 768GB of storage (SSD, naturally), and a promised seven hours of battery life with 30 days standby. Iran To Shut Down Internet Completely

Millions of Internet users in Iran will be permanently denied access to the World Wide Web and cut off from popular social networking sites and email services, as the government has announced its plans to establish a national Intranet within five months.

In a statement released Thursday, Reza Taghipour, the Iranian minister for Information and Communications Technology, announced the setting up of a national Intranet and the effective blockage of services like Google, Gmail, Google Plus, Yahoo and Hotmail, in line with Iran’s plan for a “clean Internet.”

The government is set to roll out the first phase of the project in May, following which Google, Hotmail and Yahoo services will be blocked and replaced with government Intranet services like Iran Mail and Iran Search Engine. At this stage, however, the World Wide Web, apart from the aforementioned sites, will still be accessible. Continue reading

London 2012 Olympics: Games May Suffer Slow Internet Speeds

While everyone is hoping for super-fast speeds from the UK’s athletes at the London Olympics, experts are warning that internet speeds may not keep pace.

Already hailed as the “Twitter Games”, many are predicting a deluge of data as events get under way.

It has led the Internet Service Providers’ Association to warn of a “massive hit on the infrastructure”.

Businesses could struggle with bandwidth if they allow employees to watch the games at work, it said.

ISPA member James Blessing said that businesses allowing employees to watch streamed content could encounter problems.

“The average connection speed for small and medium business is unlikely to allow every employee to stream the Olympics to their desk,” he said. Continue reading
